This morning, I went on a half-day guided fly fishing trip in the tailwaters of the Arkansas River near Pueblo, CO. I had the great pleasure of spending the morning with my fishing guide – Connell O’Grady - from The Drift Fly Shop. Connell was an excellent fishing guide, very knowledgeable about the river structure, the hatches, and I learned an incredible number of tips for fishing the tailwaters.
There was a mix of brown trout and rainbow trout. My largest fish was a 19” brown trout. All fishing was catch and release. The water and air temperature were comfortable – I wore my waders and Connell was wet wading. According to Connell, fishing is about to get even better! I’m looking forward to exploring this river even more and would encourage anyone considering a guided fly fishing trip on the tailwaters of the Arkansas River to set up a guided trip with Connell.

This morning as I stood there in the river looking around me…. flies were in the air, trout were sipping on the surface, and the steady calm flow of the river kept passing by. While taking all of this in and the incredible scenery, I could not help but think to myself how incredible this type of environment is for clearing of the mind. I just stood there watching all of these natural processes going on around me and couldn’t help but think that perhaps I should write an article on the reasons why I believe learning how to fly fish can make you a better manager.
