Student Run Newspapers Are A Wealth Of Ideas
Besides checking world news from various sources, and various news sources around the Finger Lakes of New York State as I follow Cayuga County, NY news, I also make it a point to take a daily look at The Cornell Daily Sun, considering how long I have been affiliated and am still very much connected with former coworkers and friends at Cornell University.
I have always said for a long time that as a prospective student, parent, job seeker, donor, and alumni...if you want to see how any particular university is doing in terms of holding up their end of the bargain towards their students...just take a look at the headlines and articles in the university's student run newspapers. The editorial and opinion articles are both entertaining and can provide a wealth of information into what is going on at that particular university.
As such, if you work at a university, even if you don't agree with your student run newspaper politics...sign up for a digital copy of the paper or at least make a donation to support them. You may not agree with what they are saying...but they are fighting for the same Constitutional Rights that you want protected and rely so heavily on. It's too bad more alumni and university sports fans don't donate just 0.05% per year of what they spend on university sports materials...to that university's student run newspaper. Personally, I also think alumni associations should include a check box along with alumni membership that makes it easy for alumni to include whatever donation they wanted to the student run newspaper, along with their alumni membership payment.
While I definitely read to stay in tune with what is happening on campus for information, knowledge, and to hear the student's perspective, I have to admit that I really read the online version for the humor found in the editorial and opinion articles. In fact, there was a recent Opinion article on November 7, 2024 by a young professional who will no doubt be a future woman leader...Grace Elmore...who makes a very strong argument for a national strike that I fully support with the caveat that not only exemptions to this strike be made for GOOD Guys...such as yours truly....after the divorce is finalized....from whatever political reality we are all living in. Just for the fun of it, I do keep a listing of stories from The Cornell Daily Sun on the webpage...appropriately called...A New Sun Rising.
Dear Grace, I wish you the best of success with implementation of your nation-wide strike and as soon as Cayuga County, NY leaves me alone...I will be there to help support your cause and to continue Supporting the The Cornell Daily Sun! ROCK ON!!!
Repost of the article: Giving Credit Where Credit Is Due...
I just read a letter from the editor on The Cornell Daily Sun posted on May 4, 2024, and wanted to share the link and give credit where credit is due when it comes to student leadership.

When people ask me how I am able to continue to keep the faith despite all of the fun opportunities Cayuga County, NY and Cornell University continue to provide to me as they continue demonstrating how clowns behave under a Big Red Circus Tent…it’s because of students and staff from student run organizations like The Cornell Daily Sun!
It's not too big a surprise from this former Cornell employee...or other people who have enjoyed The Sun...for decades...as The Cornell Daily Sun was founded in 1880 and is the oldest continuously independent college daily in the United States.
You can help support the efforts of independent news sources like The Cornell Daily Sun…or help support the student run newspaper at a campus near you. We need independent news sources like The Cornell Daily Sun and those of us a little further along in our careers need to lead by example to support these types of student run organizations too. We were once in their shoes and someone else encouraged and supported us along the way so we could be successful too.
Please help to Support The Sun...as we all need more light in these Big Red dark days…especially those currently in Day Hall…in case you have not read this one yet…
