The Parable Of The Sadhu...Remembered
I read an interesting article this morning about the Maha Kumbh Mela, or the festival of the Sacred Pitcher called “One of the world’s greatest religious spectacles is underway and the numbers are staggering.” Regardless of your religious beliefs or stated religious affiliations…you have to admit that 400 million people showing what their FAITH looks like…is pretty impressive…
The original article mentions this particular gathering is well-known for attracting large numbers of Hindu holy men who travel from across the country to attend. These Hindu holy men are also known as “Sadhus”. This news article reminded me of one of my favorite parables that I learned about when I was attending courses working towards my Masters of Business Administration (MBA) at Binghamton University.
The Parable of the Sadhu is an interesting case study on both individual and community choices and ethical decision-making, which results in action or no action, being taken in a given situation. At a first glance and study of the parable of the Sadhu, it could be easy to assume the story was about one person…whether it is the Sadhu or each of the individuals the Sadhu encounters along the way. However, a deeper analysis of this parable reveals numerous ethical issues surrounding individual and community thinking, feeling, and decision-making when presented with a difficult challenge.
If you ask me, reading and understanding the Parable of the Sadhu is just as important and relevant today…if not more so…then it was when it was first published.
Here are two options for learning about the Parable of the Sadhu:
